Rock-Cut

In our project „rock-cut“ we describe archaic landscapes of rock and stone, mountains arisen millions of years ago. In the past, people found refuge in this wildness and carved their homes into the rocky landscape.

First cave dwellings in the rough plateaus of Central Anatolia date back before Christ. Christians built entire villages deep into the soft tuff to protect themselve from prosecution. Nowadays the architecture of rural structures joins with an ancient culture of living and faith.

We describe a dual cultural landscape, the occidental Christian and the modern Turkish. Nowadys you can find Turkish villages placed among abandoned Christian cave dwellings.
